PL/pgSQL is a feature rich language that gives you a robust development environment inside of PostgreSQL. It has the conditionals and loops of any higher level language, but how you think about coding inside of your database is different than how you would code in your application servers. In this tutorial we will introduce PL/pgSQL syntax, best practices for writing code inside of your database and performance considerations. Throughout the tutorial, we will build commonly used functions that most environments need at some point like index maintenance functions and table partitioning.

Some of the topics covered are:

  • Conditionals
  • Loops
  • Cursors
  • Exception Handling
  • Dynamic SQL
  • Triggers
